Dry Eye Overview
Dry Eye
A common condition affecting one in four people in the UK
Tear Fluid
The normal tear fluid is made up of three layers – an oily layer, a watery layer, and a sticky layer – and these normal tears are what prevent our eyes from feeling dry
Cause
People with dry eye either don’t make enough normal (lubricating) tears or the ones that they make are of poor quality
Effect
The condition can be very uncomfortable. Severe cases do have a risk of causing long-term damage, but fortunately these are rare

Dry Eye
A chronic condition that results from insufficient production of normal tears or the tears evaporate quickly because of a problem with the tear film that covers the eye surface, including the cornea.
It is very common condition that affects millions of people worldwide and is one of the most common reasons why patients visit the Eye Health Clinic. Dry eye is usually associated with dryness, scratchiness, or burning of the eyes.
Drag the slider to the left and right to see the effects of Dry Eye. An eye suffering from a dry eye condition is on the left, with a normal eye on the right.
The redness is an indication of the inflammation associated with dry eye.
This condition results in itchy, sore, and gritty eyes often with a burning sensation
Typical Symptoms
- A sandy or gritty feeling
- Sore eyes
- Uncomfortable and sometimes painful eyes
- An itching or burning sensation
- Short-term blurred vision
- Watery eyes, as if you are crying (having watery eyes can mean you are producing poor-quality tears and actually have dry eyes)
These are some of the factors that can give you dry eyes:
Age and gender
As we age, our eyes produce fewer tears, which is why dry eyes affect around 75% of all people aged over 65. Gender is also a factor, with women more likely to suffer than men. Women may also suffer as a result of hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, lactation, menstruation and menopause.
Using digital devices
When you use a laptop, tablet or phone you don’t tend to blink as much as you do normally. This can cause evaporation of your tears and cause dry eyes.
Wearing contact lenses
Dry eye irritation is a very common side effect of wearing contact lenses. However even a simple step of adding a lubricating eye drop to you contact lens routine can make your eyes feel much better.
Medications
Certain medications that can cause dry eye symptoms. Example of medicines are: Antihistamines, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants.
Diseases
Some diseases are often closely related to dry eyes, including arthritis and diabetes. Sjögren’s Syndrome is a condition with a combination of symptoms that includes arthritis dry eyes and dry mouth.
Eyelid inflammation
Inflammation of the eyelid glands also referred to as meibomian glands and eyelash follicles can disrupt the quality of the tear film and cause tears to evaporate more rapidly. This is often caused by an increased level of bacteria on the eyelids. Simple steps can be taken to treat this with an improved routine for eyelid hygiene and warm compresses.

What is Cataract Treatment?
Contact Lens Problems are common in the UK
Did you know that there is an actual proper side to wearing your lenses?
There are many types and sizes of contact lenses and its important to make sure you are using the correct lenses for your eyes.
If your eyes are stinging, burning, itching or painfull remove the lenses immediately and seek advice.
The damage caused by glaucoma can’t be reversed. But treatment and regular checkups can help slow or prevent vision loss, especially if you catch the disease in its early stages.
Glaucoma is treated by lowering your eye pressure (intraocular pressure). Depending on your situation, your options may include prescription eyedrops, oral medications, laser treatment, surgery or a combination of any of these.
Treatments depend on the type of AMD you have.
Dry AMD – there’s no treatment, but vision aids can help reduce the effect on your life.
Wet AMD – you may need regular eye injections and, very occasionally, a light treatment called “photodynamic therapy” to stop your vision getting worse.
