Where are Meibomian Glands

The meibomian glands are inside the eyelids, and the openings are on the edge of the eyelids.

What happens with MGD

The glands become blocked and the oily part of the tears cannot be released. This causes the watery tears to dry up more quickly which results in the eye becoming dry and sore

Effects of MGD

When the glands that make the oily layer of the tears are not working properly it causes the watery layer of tears to dry out.

Long Term Treatment

It tends to be a long-term condition, which means you’re likely to need ongoing treatment

What is MGD

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) has been shown to affect 86% of people with dry eye.

The normal tears of the eye are made up of three layers – an oily (lipid) layer, a watery (aqueous) layer, and a sticky (mucous) layer. MGD is when the glands that make the oily layer of the tears are not working properly and this allows the watery layer of the tears to dry out.

Whether you are a computer user, screen user, a contact lens wearer, or a candidate for cataract or refractive surgery, significant attention should be paid to identifying compromised, lost and malfunctioning glands.

Here at the Eye Health Clinic we can assess your Meibomian gland function and structure with technology like the meibomian gland evaluator and meibography.

MGD Dry Eye or Both

Many patients and even doctors mistakenly view MGD as a form of dry eye. That’s because the two conditions frequently go hand in hand. But it is important to recognize that the two diseases are not the same.

MGD is a common contributor to dry eye disease and has been shown to aff ect 86% of patients with dry eye, but they are two separate conditions. The reason we tend to put them in the same bracket is because when you have decreased oils being expressed from the meibomian glands in an MGD patient, at some point it will likely have an effect on the tear film and ocular surface, leading to evaporative dry eye disease.

Disease Diagnosis

MGD cannot be diagnosed based on symptoms alone. This is due to the fact that many people have no symptoms even when they have rather advanced disease.

It important to be proactive as it is much more difficult treat later in the disease process. People with MGD have the risk that the blocked glands become atrophied (damaged) and may not recover if the disease is not identified early enough.

Our job at the clinic is to identify and treat MGD even when patient doesnt know they have a problem.

Puffy Eyelids Treatment

Puffy eyes and dark circles are very common and can give you a tired and old appearance. This can cause you to feel embarrassed, and affect your confidence and self-esteem. The best solution for puffy eyes and dark circles will depend on the underlying cause.

Cataracts Treatment

What is Cataract Treatment?

Contact Lens Problems are common in the UK
Did you know that there is an actual proper side to wearing your lenses?
There are many types and sizes of contact lenses and its important to make sure you are using the correct lenses for your eyes.
If your eyes are stinging, burning, itching or painfull remove the lenses immediately and seek advice.

Glaucoma Management

The damage caused by glaucoma can’t be reversed. But treatment and regular checkups can help slow or prevent vision loss, especially if you catch the disease in its early stages.

Glaucoma is treated by lowering your eye pressure (intraocular pressure). Depending on your situation, your options may include prescription eyedrops, oral medications, laser treatment, surgery or a combination of any of these.

Dry and Wet Macular Degeneration

Treatments depend on the type of AMD you have.

Dry AMD – there’s no treatment, but vision aids can help reduce the effect on your life.

Wet AMD – you may need regular eye injections and, very occasionally, a light treatment called “photodynamic therapy” to stop your vision getting worse.
