Facial Pigmentation Treatment

Everything you need to know about IPL

What is IPL Treatment

IPL stands for ‘Intense Pulsed Light’. The treatment generates a broad spectrum of light to heat the dermal tissue without harming or removing the outer epidermal layers of the skin. The body’s natural processes then work to break down and remove these marks, visibly reducing skin imperfections. This type of light treatment can soften and reduce the appearance of brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles, thread veins, freckles, rosacea, acne and age pigmentation spots.

This is a suitable way to treat both brown skin pigmentation (sun damage and hormone related melasma) as well as red skin pigmenation (eg rosacea and fine thread veins).

What Can Be Treated

IPL is well known for treating pigmentation, but it can be used for much more. It is also used for Skin Rejuvenation, which is an extremely popular treatment for dull, lacklustre skin, as it can restore your skins radiance, resulting in healthy glow and smoother, clearer skin. It is an ideal solution for preventing signs of ageing, as it also stimulates Collagen and Elastin production which reduces superficial lines, wrinkles and plumps the skin.
Below is a list of concerns that can be treated by IPL:

• Pigmentation
• Sun-spots
• Age spots
• Rosacea and red veins
• Birthmarks
• Sun-damage
• Melasma
• Hair removal (we have a different machine specifically for this – see Soprano Ice Laser Hair Removal)
• Lacklustre skin
• Skin texture
• Superficial lines and wrinkles

How Does It Work

IPL works by emitting a pulse of light energy at a particular wavelength. Your laser therapist will adjust the settings according to your concerns. Different concerns require different pulse widths (duration of the pulse) and different fluences (energy level).

When the handpiece is applied to the skin, the light energy emitted is absorbed by a target chromophore, in the case of Pigmentation this would be Melanin and in the case of Rosacea, this would be Haemoglobin (blood). These targeted chromophores heat up and then start to break down, then absorbed by the body and filtered out, minimising the look of the affected area and in some cases getting rid of it completely. It is very effective treatment, but there are some conditions that may be due to hormonal issues which may reoccur, for example, Melasma, which may be better treated with another hand piece. We can also combine with another hand piece to treat concerns like this.

What Happens During The Treatment

After an initial consultation to determine if IPL is definitely the most suitable treatment, you will be asked to return for the first session. The consultant will advise that IPL shouldn’t be undertaken two weeks prior or after a holiday in the sun.

After skin has been cleansed, a cold gel is applied to the skin to help improve conductivity. You will be given a cold air supply to direct over your face which will help cool the skin during the treatment.

The therapist will then apply the laser to the skin and fire a short burst of light onto each patch of skin. The head of this hand held laser is about the size ten pence piece so you can expect about 25 burst of the laser on each side of the face. After the treatment, skin will be cleansed and protected with a UV protection cream.

Is There Any Downtime After IPL

IPL is a light and heat-based treatment which means that it can feel warm during treatment. No anaesthetic cream is needed, but the warmth can last for a few minutes after the laser has been applied and there may be some redness in the treated and surrounding areas. The area cools down very quickly and we can apply an aloe vera gel after treatment to help with cooling if necessary.

The skin may sometimes appear a little reddened in patches for a couple of hours after the treatment but nothing that makeup couldn’t easily camouflage. In the next few days you’ll notice that the targeted red or brown marks on your face will appear slightly redder or browner. This diminishes quickly over a couple of days and then skin will appear clear and bright. None of this is particularly noticeable or unsightly.

Your IPL therapist will make sure you are completely comfortable throughout any of your treatment.

Does IPL Hurt

There is no avoiding the issue. IPL on the face involves a degree of discomfort. The first burst of the laser is a bit of a shock. It feels like a mild electric shock which can seem stronger on sensitive areas such as the nose, upper lip or along the jaw near teeth, but is barely noticeable on the forehead or cheeks.

Once you know what to expect though, the treatment is easy to bear. One good thing is that it is over very quickly. If there is an average of 50 bursts of laser for the entire face and one is done every two seconds, a full treatment can be over within two or three minutes.

Also, expect a disconcerting smell of burning hair as the light emissions frazzle the hair on your skin. The upside to this though is that you’ll find the treatment has the added benefit of reducing the strength of any darker, thicker hairs on your upper lip or chin.

How Many Treatments Do I Need

Results can be seen after 1 treatment however we recommend a course of treatments. Sometimes pigment may sit deeper in the skin than it first appears and if this is the case then you may need more sessions to get the best results possible.

Puffy Eyelids Treatment

Cataracts Treatment

What is Cataract Treatment?

Contact Lens Problems are common in the UK
Did you know that there is an actual proper side to wearing your lenses?
There are many types and sizes of contact lenses and its important to make sure you are using the correct lenses for your eyes.
If your eyes are stinging, burning, itching or painfull remove the lenses immediately and seek advice.

Glaucoma Management

The damage caused by glaucoma can’t be reversed. But treatment and regular checkups can help slow or prevent vision loss, especially if you catch the disease in its early stages.

Glaucoma is treated by lowering your eye pressure (intraocular pressure). Depending on your situation, your options may include prescription eyedrops, oral medications, laser treatment, surgery or a combination of any of these.

Dry and Wet Macular Degeneration

Treatments depend on the type of AMD you have.

Dry AMD – there’s no treatment, but vision aids can help reduce the effect on your life.

Wet AMD – you may need regular eye injections and, very occasionally, a light treatment called “photodynamic therapy” to stop your vision getting worse.
